(BBC News) Poland welcomes US decision to make command permanent
--Poland’s deputy foreign minister has welcomed a US decision to make its military presence in the country permanent.

Earlier, at the Nato summit in Madrid, President Joe Biden announced that the US 5th Corp command headquarters in Poznan, western Poland, would become permanent.

It will be the first time Nato or US troops are stationed permanently in the country – previously deployments have always been on a persistent rotational basis. “Something that seemed impossible to many is becoming a fact today. We have a permanent presence in Poland. We care about our common security. It is also a clear signal to Moscow,” Marcin Przydacz wrote on Twitter.

Poland has long called for the US military deployment in the country to be changed from rotational to permanent.

The US 5th Corps Command headquarters was set up in Poznan in November 2020. Its 200 staff conduct operational planning, mission command and oversight of the US land forces in Europe. Military analysts say the decision to make the HQ permanent will mean an increase in its staff to around 700.

There are about 4,500 US troops serving with Nato on a persistent rotational basis in north eastern Poland, and Washington has also temporarily deployed an additional 4,700 soldiers to Rzeszow in south-eastern Poland - not far from the Ukraine border.

It certainly would help the US save resources if Russia were to take over the onus of military power in Europe.

And there could be even more savings if the Chinese are allowed to have the control over the Pacific they would like.

Wonderful more of our resources in other nations as ours crumbles
Good thing you weren't in charge back in 1945 or most of Western Europe would be speaking Russian....

Same general principle, my friend.
Nope! Europe has their own resources, they have spit on us for decades and our nation is literally crumbling as we speak. Time to handle your issues and it’s time we bring everyone home not put more out there.

How have they spit on us precisely?

How have they spit on us precisely?

How quickly people forget.
Have you forgotten how Trump showed the world how Europe has been ripping us off for decades with tariffs. Trillions stolen. And more trillions spent to defend their asses since ww2. What do we get in return from Europe, distain! Fuck Europe, handle your own problems for ONCE!

Even with the EU, Europe is incapable of acting as a unified military whole - and does anyone seriously think Putin will stop once Ukraine has been levelled to dust ?

Given we - and the Soviets - were the only countries still standing after 1945, we pretty much had no choice. (Well, either that or let the Soviets' run roughshod through to the Channel.)

Sure for a while but they have had 75 years to build a military, but they put it into free handouts instead of people building up themselves instead. Screw them!

Apparently you missed everything from 1945 to the end of the Cold War 'cause back then they - Europe, that is - did have a solid military. Nowadays... *shrugs*(

Some countries had a decent military like France and Britain but still sorely lacking even during the Cold War. They were to dependent on us.

I for one would certainly not spit on US forces. While I have the utmost respect for our own military, I would be the first to admit that Britain, even with the aid of Commonwealth forces, would never have had the might required for the D-Day landings and the subsequent push to Germany.

I happen to live near Mildenhall, where the US Air Force has a large presence. As far as I'm aware there is absolutely no friction between local population and US Air Force personel.
In fact many Americans have bought property and become residents in the area themselves.

DeGaulle would've loved to argued that point with you, my friend....

Remember that little war Britain had down there in South America in the 80s. They won by the skin of their pants and a lot of luck. Europe depended on our military while they created a huge government handout state.

And yet in many ways they're more capitalistic than we are (just look at their sporting leagues for a good example of that).
