How come police don't have to use turn signals? *Sarcasm*

It is very rare I ever see a cop obeying regular traffic laws. Just today on the way to the dentist a cop cut me off and didn't signal a lane change. He did this not once, not twice, but three times! Now, before anyone starts saying he may of been responding to a non-urgent police call, I highly doubt it, because he wasn't in a hurry to get anywhere from the way he was driving. However, if I don't use a turn signal, that same cop is likely to give me a ticket for failure to signal.

To answer your question, you should check the Motor Vehicle Act for your state. In my state, public safety responders and emergency personnel on duty are exempt from using blinkers and seat belts. Is it fair? No. Is it the law? Yes.

I'm unsure of the law in Alabama for that, but either way, the law is in place to help them do their job effectively. In an emergency situation I don't expect emergency responders to use their turn signals, but on regular patrol, or outside of an emergency, it is wrong and unsafe. Public safety responders shouldn't be a safety hazard to other motorist on the road.

I just asked a State Trooper about turn signals. He told me that since police vehicles are exempt, the turn signals have been replaced with flasher lights. In other words, most police vehicles, don't even have turn signal lights. Again, this is not for every state, if in doubt about your state you can either call the police dept. or look it up.

Okay, so, if you're on the police force, you're using your work car (the police car) and you don't have to use the turn signals like other drivers do. So do you turn the dome light on instead, then? You know, the one you turn on as you're turning the sirens on?
