Pound/Dollar shops

There are so many shops here in the UK and also in the States that sell items for only a pound/dollar, which can be both a good thing or bad thing. In the UK, we have shops like Poundland that do this sort of thing and there's a new one just opened that is down the road from me.

I don't really have a say on pound shops but I can say that these things can be good for some things, especially for young families. Although, if you buy a lot of things that are each worth a pound and the total cost comes to say £30, you'll soon realise that you bought a lot of rubbish, whereas this doesn't happen if you buy things from a supermarket. Quite hard to explain but I think you may catch my drift. Also, if you buy a regular-size box of Cornflakes from any of these shops, you can actually get a larger box of it for a lower price at a supermarket. Better value I should say.

So, what's your opinion on pound/dollar shops? Can they be useful or just a waste of time? And, do you go to them for whatever reason?

I've shopped in my local Dollar Store. I've gotten some pretty good things there too for only a $1. Sunglasses, gift wrap, dog collars & leashes, large plastic storage containers, helium birthday balloons, and list could go on and on. You just have to be careful as to the quality of the items and if they're really worth even paying a $1 for them. Must say, the $1 can be very addicting!

Exactly. Although, that reminds me of a Channel 4 documentary I watched months ago about Poundland, and it was revealed that some of its toys were deemed harmful to children, and were put under of what's called a "phantom brand", i.e. a brand name that is made up (or something like that). An example of such harmful toy was a squidgy plastic one that lets off toxic fumes if burned

I've shopped in Poundland before. Some pretty good deals, but I like the 99p store.

The dollar store has lots of neat stuff sometimes so we'll go in there once in a while. Buying things from a dollar store can be a gamble because sometimes their products are cheaply made and breakable while other things are good quality.
