(The Guardian) Let’s check in with Joe Biden, who has arrived at the Detroit Auto Show.

He’s set to deliver “remarks highlighting the electric vehicle manufacturing boom in America" at 1:45 pm eastern time according to the White House, but is first getting a look at the latest models from America’s automakers.

Biden is a vintage Chevrolet Corvette owner, and CNN caught him behind the wheel of the latest model...

Here he is checking out Ford’s new electric offerings..

Why does Biden care so much about electric cars? In part because the Inflation Reduction Act, as the marquee spending bill he signed last month is known, includes incentives to try to get more Americans to buy the vehicles, as part of a larger strategy to lower America’s carbon emissions. The other reason is that Biden is a “car guy”, as he likes to describe himself.

He looks so out of place

So did Trump during his presidency....

And then Brandon realized this wasn’t a ice cream place.

You know, as I look at all the new vehicles, I can't help but think that maybe the free market, the vaunted free market, has decided that electric/hybrid/plug-in electric hybrid vehicles are the future and all the motorhead purists out there can just frankly....

It’s the future for disaster. I mean if you just simply go to work and back it’s fine, but if you’re on the road throughout the day they are crap. They don’t go many miles and even less in hot states where you use AC. Until they charge as fast as filling up a gas tank they will continue to suck. The price to replace those batteries ain’t cheap. And they are environmental catastrophe in many cases because they are not be disposed of properly.

And yet, as technology improves and these vehicles get better and better, the same free market will reflect it.
Heck, it costs less now to get a kilowatt of power from renewables (including nuclear) than it does from fossil energy.

That’s the key the free market! Not government forcing a product on a population that either doesn’t want it or can’t use it because it’s not ready for mass distribution.

And auto companies are responding to that market.

They see where its' headed and are moving in that direction; it also helps that California is moving towards zero/low-emissions vehicles, which gives said companies a nice incentive to sell their vehicles and parts there.

Yes the free market but we’re 30 years from having something as good and reliable as a gas vehicle. But it’s government that wants to force this on people before it’s ready and affordable.

No it once again hurts the poor when government is mandating what you can have to survive when they can’t afford it. Anyways it’s going to the courts and it won’t stand.

They tried that a few years ago and California's emissions ruled were deemed constitutional; after all, the Clean Air Act grandfathered-in state-level emissions standards (which is why California can mandate stricter standards than the other 49 states). In other words, if you want to get rid of it, don't whine to the courts over it (as you guys on the Right often tell us on the Left) but march your little ass down to Congress and petition them to redress your little grievance (you know, the one part of the 1st Amdt. that's often overlooked).

So was abortion, we have a different court now.

We're not talking about abortion so that's irrelevant...
No, I think he has a point there. The dynamics of the supreme court are quite different now. So we can't be certain they will follow precedent. The overturning of Roe v Wade showed they are comfortable going against previous rulings.

Okay, point conceded. Thing is, even with the Court's move to the Right, Scarlet, the auto companies - if forced to choose between selling cars to differing standards or selling cars that would qualify for California's standards - will choose to build to the stricter emissions standards. Hence the companies' moves towards electric/hybrid/etc. vehicles.

It’s always irrelevant when people have been proven wrong on a subject
Not when those same idiots elected a thrice-married serial sexual predator named Donald Trump....oh, wait: that was Deplorables, wasn't it?

And the guy married three times will be re-elected again.
