Prince Harry has been promoted to the rank of captain by the British army, it has been announced.

St James's Palace said the prince had achieved the rank after completing five years' service.

The prince, who is training as an Apache helicopter pilot, joined the Army in 2005 and spent 10 weeks serving in Afghanistan in 2007-08.

During his deployment he served as a forward air controller directing ground attack jets in Helmand province.

His tour of duty made him the first royal in more than 25 years to serve in a war zone.

Does everyone who completes five years of service get promoted to captain? Or...did he get promoted because he's Prince Harry?

The prince was left disappointed in May 2007 when it was deemed too dangerous for him to serve in Iraq.

He completed his recce soldier training as a member of the Household Cavalry's Blues and Royals in October 2007

In 2007-08, he spent 10 weeks serving in Afghanistan

His deployment was cut short though, after a news blackout was broken, leading to fears for his safety In December 2008 he trained to become an Army Air Corps helicopter pilot

He passed his pilot course in 2010

Does any of the above (especially that which I have put in bold) warrant him being promoted to captain?

Actually yes, promoting the guy enough would give him an office job

More to the point though... it wouldn't even be news if he weren't a prince.

He wants to go back. And it's not really his fault that his time in Afghanistan was cut short. Plus, he's now a captain of a helicopter crew which is used for recon purposes.

i got a lot of respect for the guy when it comes to service............at least he had the balls to go up the sharp end in astan.............he could quite easily have sat it out.......cant say that about any damn politician ......and the apache isnt so much as recon as hunter-killer so if he does get to go back he will have a very active role
