School pupils have been banned from playing outside after dozens of youngsters were attacked and had their lunches stolen by red kites.

Children have been forced to stay inside during lunch and break times after being ambushed by the birds of prey.

One boy at Icknield Community College, in Watlington, Oxon, even needed a tetanus jab after a bird slashed him on the arm.

Pupil Nebulous Biggins, 16, said: ''Red kites come and swarm around everyone when they're eating.

''They've swooped down to grab it out of our hand. One Year eight student had his hand scratched by one of them and had a tetanus jab.

''When they're flying above, you don't get a feel for how big they are. But when they're up close, they are very intimidating.''

Another pupil, Amy Spicer, 14, added: ''It's really scary. They dive down at us when we're eating our packed lunch on the playing field.

''They are beautiful birds but they are also very vicious. When you see their claws outstretched, it's terrifying.

''We've been told by teachers not to play outside because too many pupils have been attacked.

''One of my friends almost had her eye out when one of the birds tried to snatch a sausage roll from her hand.''

Farm workers, the RAF and members of the public have called for a cull of the birds after a spate of attacks.

When I was younger at middle school, we had a similar problem but with Jackdaws

I agree they are beautiful birds but disagree they are very vicious. They are obviously not attacking the pupils for no reason. They are attacking the pupils for their food. Best if these pupils are not allowed to eat their lunches outside but as far a just playing outside, I don't see why they are being banned from doing that.

Well exactly, Food should be eaten in the dinner hall or in classrooms, I don't ever remember us being allowed to eat our food outside when I was younger.

We had the same problem in school. except it was seagulls. We weren't banned from eating outside but everyone knew not to or the birds would get ya.
