Have you ever had to have one of your pets or animals put to sleep (euthanized)?

yes.....the hardest decision i have ever made..........broke my heart

.....lost my best friend that day

Yes and I knew it was time but it broke my heart. The hardest was my dog looked forward to a ride in the car. I knew it would be his last ride and it was just horrible for me. The only saving grace was that I was able to stay with him when they euthanized him and held him tight and told him how much I loved him. It was very quick and looked like he just went to sleep. RIP my beautiful Rikko

I know how you feel beowulf and almost didn't post in this thread. My Rikko was a rescued Greyhound. He was a champion racer but when he could no longer race due to a pulled tendon in his leg, the owner starved him and tied him to a tree to die. Thank goodness he was found by the Greyhound Rescue Society. When I adopted him he was skin and bones and had scars on him from the whipping he took.

It's been 5 years but you never get over the loss. I also cried while posting this as it brought back so many memories. I was very lucky to have him in my life and still feel the void that he's not here with me.

I've had to have pets put down before, and it is hard. The way that you think about it is that they're being euthanised for a reason. They're going to die anyway, so putting the animal to sleep will save them hours, maybe days, of suffering that they shouldn't endure.

It's terrible when they're young, though. We lost Thomas (cat) when he was 17, and it wasn't as hard knowing that he lived a long life.

Yes, we had to put down three of our dogs. Not at the same time, I don't think but close to it. We had to put two down due to cancer and the third of old age. She had reached 17 years when we put her down.

We found a cat outside near our bins - it was VERY skinny, and looked like it hadn't eaten for days. We took it in and went through some procedures where we finally got to keep him. We named him Fitz. Unfortunately, he couldn't be helped enough. He was gradually dying so we put him down. It made me cry, but life is life so you have to move on.
