Reading emotions

Can you read another person's emotions?

Can you easily tell how other people are feeling?

How useful is this ability?

I can read the main emotions, but I'm awful at subtlety. I always do or say something wrong...

It's very difficult to know how a person feels when we're taught since birth to hide our emotions from the rest of the world, so everyone does exactly as taught.

Maybe based on facial expressions or how they're talking but beyond that, I can't really read other people's emotions.
