Reading Plays - Why??

So, schools often times try to make you read plays. Plays are meant to be acted out and when read seem to be incredibly boring. Granted there are some exceptions, but for the most part, plays are meant to be acted out.

Have you ever been forced to read a play like it's another form of literature? What are your thoughts?

Do they? I don't think I've ever read a play.

I had an assignment to read a couple, and I do remember that one of them was a classic Greek tragedy. The other might have been Shakespeare. I don't remember getting all the way through either of them.

If you are taking classes in literature or theater you should almost expect it.

In a modern media production class you might end up reading a screen-play or script, which is essentially the same thing.

I remember reading two plays by Gilbert & Sullivan. I don't recall the names of the plays. I do, however, recall being bored to death.

I've had to read MacBeth.
I'll agree that plays are meant to be played out rather than read, they're not exactly written to be a decent book.

I had to read Otelo, it was back in 2012, totally boring. Seriously.
