What real life event would make an excellent "based on a true story" movie?

Thereby hangs a quandary.

The Allied invasion of the Normandy coastline during WW2 was a real event.

"The Longest Day" was an excellent movie based on that event.

Amongst the production crew for the movie were a large number of individuals from both sides, including several German officers and the widow of Field Marshal Rommel, as well as many Allied enlisted and officers.

Some of the movie was shot on location, others were not, such as some beaches in Ireland standing in for their cousins across the Channel, and so on. But it was "real enough" to cause some veterans in the cast to have flashbacks to the actual battle.

However, after its release, some groups, who may have not been paid for their input by the producers, had heartburn about the movie. They had forgotten this, or overlooked that, or paid too much attention to something else.

The producer's response boiled down to: "We made a movie. (get over it)"

The same has held true for everything all the way up to "Apollo 13".

While the movie may be as true to the event as it can be, you still have to "make a movie".

But beyond that, I'm not sure what I'd like to see "done".
