Alright.

This forum was hacked, I know of two others...but most importantly I was also hacked... These hacking's done by "spook and shade" , mostly afterwards demanding money to get your recent database back.

I posted on MyBB support, to get hit down that I gave personal information out. Which I did. My own fault. But that is not why my forum was hacked, unless multiple people had did the same thing I did.

So can us Founders really control the fate of our forum from being hacked or should MyBB rest some blame on themselves for the lack of security?

Hackers are out there in cyber space, 24/7.......Whose fault is it, that they're allowed to hack? Is it the ones who started this site? No.....Is it the one's who use this site? Could be, but are unaware that they are causing the problem.....And so, they, too, can not be blamed for it......

Can it be prevented? Yes, if you know how to do it......Making sure that the html you bring into the site, is clean....Know the carrier of that html.....Make sure that their url has https://. If it doesn't, then it's wise not to copy images from that site.....That one little s tells you, that the site is secure, no hackers can get in.....

Those hackers want to do damage....If you accidentally open up a html., that a hacker has hooked on to, all kinds of problems will crop up, even cause your computer to act funny, or, worse crash.....I know, this for a fact....My last computer crashed, it'll be a year ago next March....I thought that the on line protector would be enough.....It isn't, and beware! Those on line protectors will cause computer crashes........

It's much safer to pay for your protection from your on line carrier......And get the most expensive protection they have......That most expensive service, will guard against hackers, and keep all of your sites secure.....

Hackers can hack anything that's on the internet if they know what they're doing... nothing is completely secured...

There is no such thing as a forum or any other site on the internet that can't be hacked.  "Total security" on the web is an imagined fantasy that will never come true.

Also false.  You don't have to pay through the nose for protection, but regardless, nothing can be hacker-proof.  Nothing at all.
Well Smooth, I learned just a little bit differently.....I was using on line protection..... Free variety, which stopped some trojans and worms, and hackers....But....I thought I was safe.....Nope, computer crashed....

Got my new computer, called my on line carrier, and asked about their protection.... I ordered top of the line protection....Which means I pay 15 dollars a month, and that's a life time fee, will not increase, but when they do upgrades, I receive them at no extra cost to me.....

your internet carrier can't help you from a website/forum hack...

it could help you from people tying to hack your computer system, but still, there's ways around security if the hackers know what they're doing...

I use Avast , it's free and it's great.
Me too and I've been using it for years without any problems at all.

Whose fault?

Well, it HAS to be.....

It can range from a loophole in a plugin/extension, to something like an admin using a very easy password. Even using a strong password does not 100% help these days. So long as you take constant backups etc when you do get hit you are able to revert to a backup.

I back up my forum every night before I go to bed!

Well there you go. If you get hacked you can easily revert to it.

Like I said in the other topic a minute ago,

Hate to say it, but these hackers have kind of done something good with their mischief, they've increased awareness of possible flaws and made a few forum admins a little more security conscience.

There's only one sure-fire way to avoid being hacked, getting viruses, etc. And that's to cancel any websites you own, and toss out your computer. It doesn't matter how much protection you have; big businesses like web hosts, antivirus developers etc. work comparatively slowly. By the time Avast releases a patch to pick up on 10 new viruses, tech-savvy people have already created 100 more variants that will bypass it. The same goes for forums and other websites. Whenever an upgrade pops up, it introduces new methods of exploiting weaknesses. And with how many ways there are to shut down a website nowadays, paying for additional protection won't really matter. If someone wants to take you down that badly, they're going to do it.

As far as MyBB and the likes are concerned, there are ways to prevent a hacker from breaking your software.

Thankfully since all our passwords are hashed before being stored in the database, there's a very low chance that anyone's sensitive data was compromised. If your password was very simple like "dog" or "happy123" maybe not; those are prone to being hit by a dictionary attack or something similar.
