Have you ever been on a forum where they closed it down and asked you to register on the new forum?

This is popular on free hosted forums (that do not give out backups), the owner decides to move to paid hosting or to another free host.

Do you get frustrated at this (or would you)? You spent all your time being dedicated and accumulating a high post count only for it to be wiped clean and restarted on a new version of the forum.

Do you think if someone opens a forum where their forum will be stuck there, they should just leave the forum there forever instead of closing it down one day later on down the line to restart it somewhere else?

If its worth creating a new account then yes. I don't really care to much about post counts, If its a decent forum, You can always build up you post count again.

I could care less about post counts. So if the administrators decide to move the forum to a paid host, and if this means they have to start clean, then so be it.

I wouldnt mind it much. I come to forums for the people, not the posts. If I haven't already screencapped any posts made of win then it's my fault.

Only if they were in the middle of a posting contest and were offering a cash prize

I could care less either about post counts. I join a forum to meet new people, learn new things and just have some fun.

This happened once on a forum I was on.. guy moved the site from a free site a new one that he had to pay for..

He lost about 50% of his active members (including me, but I didn't leave because of the move). I didn't mind re-registering, though..

I find it to be very annoying. Usually when this happens I wont register on the new forum especially if they are just moving from one free host to another free host.

If the new forum has some new additions worth moving for then im fine with it

If not and its like Nebulous said a free host to another free host or something of the sort then it gets annoying

It's the same community on the other board so no I wouldn't mind. Post count is just a number anyway...

I agree that post count is only just a number. As everyone else has said, as long as they are moving for a good reason, then I'm okay and I don't mind reregistering. I especially won't mind if it's a forum that I really enjoyed that I wouldn't mind being active on again.

This happened to me recently. I registered to a forum that was probably only a week old, and I made my first reply that same day. For my reply, I was responding to the administrator's introduction policy, which I felt was too threateningly worded, and yet too vague in what was being asked for.

The administrator, in return, chose to respond less than diplomatically (to put it modestly), and implied that my suggestion to tone it down would cause the forum to devolve into chaos, and for flamers and trolls to suddenly flood the forum. When I asked how he could think that, I was ignored, but my advice was apparently considered valid: the administrator, without notice, edited his introduction policy.

In any case, I visited the forum two days later to find out that it was being started anew on another host, and that I would have to re-register.

I decided not to.

Regards,

Kevin

Well if its a new forum then I probably wont have a problem with re-registering. However if it was a forum that I devoted a couple years to, only for it to be restarted somewhere else, I'd be annoyed. Once a forum has been established that long, it seems foolish to restart it somewhere else. Doing this will probably result in a massive loss of loyal members.

If a person is serious about their forum, they will start it out on a self maintained forum software where they can move hosts / convert to other forum software's without losing any posts or members.

I know I felt slightly annoyed when we had to move over to phpBB. Cause it all seemed like a waste after we'd been on Proboards for nearly a year. Didn't really lose the main small core group though.

It's happened to my friends forum cause the forum host was annoying them, I didn't have a problem. Especially since they went from Php (Which I hate) to Zetaboards (Which I love)

Php is a scripting language not a software. Zetaboards runs off php so dose most every other forum software out there.

You must mean phpbb.

Yeah, that's what I mean. I don't really understand all the phpbb stuff.

If their moving from free to free host, i won't bother even taking a visit down to their new forums'.

If their moving free to paid then i'll probably go for it cause then i know their trying to succeed a better forum for their community!
