Hello,

Today is Remembrance Day, one of the most important days in Britain. On the 11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month(November) United Kingdom goes silent for two minutes as we remember all those brave servicemen and women who fought in all the wars since world war one and who are fighting now, They are fighting for peace and the minutes should be used to silently thank them for keeping our freedom. The Queen today laid a wreath at the Cenotaph in Whitehall. Now here is a famous poem made by someone involved in world war one about Flanders field:

In Flanders Fields

by John McCrae, May 1915

In Flanders fields the poppies blow

Between the crosses, row on row,

That mark our place; and in the sky

The larks, still bravely singing, fly

Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago

We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,

Loved and were loved, and now we lie

In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:

To you from failing hands we throw

The torch; be yours to hold it high.

If ye break faith with us who die

We shall not sleep, though poppies grow

In Flanders fields.

Poppies are worn by people across the nation to remember the people who fought.

Did you have your silence?

Thanks.

May God bless all of you, our best friend and ally.

PS - I can't tell you how much I love In Flanders Fields. Always struck my heart. Thank you - all of you! xox

It's now the 12th here and we did have our one minute silence yesterday at 11am. People also wear poppies here.

Our main rememberance day though is Anzac Day, 25 April when we have the vets marches and a holiday to celebrate. Anzac Day commemerates the landing of the Australian and NewZealand troops on the shores of Gallipoli in WWI. We were there to support our friends, the British.

Whether you agree with wars or not or any particular war those who serve deserve our thanks and our admiration. Without them we would not enjoy the freedoms we currently have.

If I should die, think only this of me:

That there's some corner of a foreign field

That is for ever England. There shall be

In that rich earth a richer dust concealed;

A dust whom England bore, shaped, made aware,

Gave, once her flowers to love, her ways to roam,

A body of England's, breathing English air,

Washed by the rivers, blessed by the suns of home.

And think, this heart, all evil shed away,

A pulse in the eternal mind, no less

Gives somewhere back the thoughts by England given;

Her sights and sounds; dreams happy as her day;

And laughter, learnt of friends; and gentleness,

In hearts a peace, under an English heaven.

Rupert Brooke (1887-1915)

Thanks for your replies and yes different countries have different remembrance days. Am I right in saying the American version of Remembrance Day is Veterans Day?
