HINESVILLE, Ga. (WJCL) — It was a historic day for Fort Stewart. Renewable solar energy is on its way to the military post.
Friday morning, officials from the US Army, Georgia Power, and Georgia Public Service Commission broke ground for a renewable solar energy project. It’ll provide a 30-megawatt, alternating current solar array at Fort Stewart, and will be designed, installed, owned and operated by Georgia Power. It’ll join other solar projects in Georgia at Fort Benning and Fort Gordon.
“What it really means is it’s about making sure we can perform our mission to secure and protect this country from adversaries wherever they may be,” said Amanda Simpson, Executive Director of Army of Energy Initiatives. “And that means we have to have access to clean and available electricity whenever we need it.”
“This was truly a win, win,” said Chuck Eaton, chairman of the Georgia Public Service Commission. “The army base has renewable targets they have to achieve. Where there was an opportunity to work with them and put these solar panels in we were happy to put the work in to do it.”
The project will be built near the intersection of Old Sunbury Road and Georgia Highway 144. It should be completed by the spring of 2016.
