Charlie Rangel Says Some Republicans 'Believe That Slavery Isn't Over'

30 Oct

Veteran Rep. Charlie Rangel (D-N.Y.) had some harsh words for the Republican Party during a Thursday campaign rally for New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo (D).

As he has done repeatedly before, Rangel compared some members of the GOP to confederates from the Civil War era. But at the Thursday evening event, he added that they "believe that slavery isn't over."

"We have to win. We have to be able to send a national message with Andrew Cuomo. And the thing is: Everything we believe in — everything we believe in — they hate. They don't disagree — they hate! They think if you didn't come from Europe 30 years ago, you didn't even make it. Some of them believe that slavery isn't over and they and think they won the Civil War!" Rangel shouted.

In contrast, Rangel said the Democratic Party is doing "God's work" on issues important to the American people.

I am pretty certain pushing for abortion and the legalizing of gay marriage along with stripping a person of their right to self defense(gun control) is hardly what I would call God's work. Perhaps he should pick up a bible sometime before stating such things? I like to point out the Republican party is no better as they aren't any better at doing what would be called God's work either as their fixation on supporting the wealthy and withholding help from the poor and needy is no closer to God's work then what the Democrats push for. Neither party is for God yet both will claim they are regardless of how anti God their platforms are.

Saying that the way a black man is treated today is anything remotely similar to the slavery days does a huge disservice to those who actually wen through the era as they would take the life they live today over the one they had to live during that era.

Has Rangel escaped from the insane asylum again!

Because every bill and law they propose and pass brings all of us black, white, spanish whatever deeper into slavery to our government.

I really, really can't wait for the majority of these old farts in their suits to leave their positions and let a new wave of non-idiots in.

No, no, no they do believe in helping the needy through personal charity not government. Conservatives far out are more charitable then the left.

You mean supporting the wealthy that provide the jobs for all Americans. Now if you are talking about cronyism I am 100 percent with you and removing government on all sides from business of any kind.

*reads thread title* ...and Republicans, to this day, still follow their patron saint of bigotry, Lee Atwater...remember his infamous quote?

...and the GOP's been playing that tune for several decades now, period, full stop.

Which Conservatives? Because Carl Rove and the Bush's are not conservatives.

And as usual with the left that quote was taken out of context. Suggest people should listen to the entire audio.

So if you take this key part of the quote (And subconsciously maybe that is part of it, I’m not saying it.) And listen to the audio where Atwater has already said several times during the interview that race is no longer a significant element in Southern politics you get the lie the left is trying to promote on him. And disclaims agreement with the proposition that Reagan’s policy positions contained a subconscious appeal to racial prejudice. This was something the person doing the interview put out there. So just another lie to cover the real hatred coming from the left.

You seem to forget, Liberty, two things: (1)that Mr. Atwater did actually say what he said - and I have no hesitation quoting him, word for word on that, to prove my point, and that (2)ever since about the late 60's or so, the very people for whom that quote applies have pretty much all migrated to the Republican Party.

Not forgetting anything I just shared the whole interview of what he said. Because then you should quote the whole interview word for word. But then the context of that single quote would be a lie. So you really don't have a point but a lie. Which means it is not very clear who you are speaking who is following what since the 60s.

Here is that interview again in case the truth flew on by you.

For the record, those were his words I quoted earlier...nice try on the obfuscation, though.:mad:

Read above no one is claiming they are not. Its just a complete and utter lie on how it was put forth.

Once again the entire interview in case you missed it twice before.
