Rescuers are tantalizingly close to reaching the 33 men trapped in a Chilean mine, possibly as early as today, officials said.

Return to your homes with peace of mind tonight knowing that tomorrow there will be surprises, Chilean Mining Minister Laurence Golborne told families of the men late Thursday night, according to La Tercera, a Chilean newspaper. Golborne said that it was more likely the team would break through to the men's underground galley on Saturday, but that with a little luck, the much anticipated event could happen today.

The men have been trapped thousands of feet underneath Chile's vast, mineral-rich Atacama desert since Aug. 5, when a mining shaft collapsed around them. All 33 survived. For more than two months, they have waited patiently as engineers converged to the site of the remote mine to help bring the miners back to the surface in what has become the world's longest-running rescue operation ever.
