'Rogue' US soldier kills Afghans

Exactly. But when they refer to the armed forces as heroes they don't use quotes. I agree to a certain degree, but they are far from heroes. Some of them do awful things (Like this guy, killing 16 innocent civilians). Some of them act more like bullies than anything else. Just like cops and other authority figures, some of them are rogue and crooked. It's a jingoistic attitude to condone everything they do.

And it is assinine to condem them across the board like some others do.

FOR THE MOST PART, they are heroes.

And yes, as with cops, and teachers, and whatever else you wish to name, there are a few assholes who are the exception.

But, by and large, the majority are the heroes they are made out to be by those of use who when they see a member of the military in uniform, thank them for their service to our country.

No, I don't ask them first to make sure they didn't kill any civilians, or were part of a unit that may have committed a war crime, or anything else. I thank them for their putting their life on the line, even if they have never seen a minute of combat, to ensure that we have the freedom to get online and call the US Military 'baby killers' and to burn the flag.

I don't mean to be offensive to soldiers or anyone who has served. But here is my own personal opinion.

The word hero should not be something thrown so generally. It depends on the person and their actions not profession. Anyone can be heroic through their own ways: a teacher can be a hero, a parent, a cop, a soldier but not all of them are. That's a problem news corps admittedly have. Labeling a whole group instead of the individual because it's easier that way. They generalize to the point of labeling every cop or soldier as heroic. In this case it's just one bad apple which spoiled the bunch.

Did you miss the part when it stated he suffered a nervous breakdown?

I can't imagine what the man must have seen out there.
