A video of a tiny dog being rescued from the jaws of a coyote by her rottweiler chum is going viral online.

The victim, Trixxie, is a 'chiweenie' - a cross between a Chihuahua and a dachshund - which stands just eight inches high.

The breed, nicknamed the Mexican Hot Dog, make a cute petite pet - but are clearly also seen as a tasty breakfast option for wild coyotes.

Trixxie was basking in the morning sunshine outside her owner's house when a coyote suddenly pounced and tried to carry her off into the scrub.

But the wily coyote hadn't banked on facing Trixxie's fierce and faithful friend - a Rottweiler named Happy that lives next door.

Happy is seen on security camera footage leaping to the puppy's defence, scaring off the shocked coyote which releases Trixxie from its jaws.

As the tiny chiweenie runs to safety to seal an unlikely escape, Happy chases the retreating coyote out of the yard.
