A giant ad showing a 'British lion' being compromised by an 'Australian wallaby' has been slammed by a top politician.

Australian Environment Minister Ryan Smith says the roadside advert, directly under Melbourne's international flight path, must be removed immediately.

Online bookmaker Sportsbet.com.au is behind the 'Rooting for the Wallabies' ad promoting the current British and Irish Lions tour of Australia.

The 170m by 90m advertisement shows a wallaby "hugging" a lion from behind, reports the Herald Sun.

Both animals are wearing the shirts of the Australian and British rugby teams and the wallaby is winking.

The Environment Minister complains that the State Government and Parks Victoria weren't consulted before the ad was painted on the government-leased reserve.

His spokesman, James Martin, said: "It is totally inappropriate, we will be insisting that it is removed as a matter of priority."

Sportsbet.com.au insists the ad is not in bad taste and says it shows the wallaby "cuddling" the lion.

Do you think this bad taste?

Lol. It's only a bit of fun. It's not too explicit so kids won't be scarred by it. It's only if your minds in the gutter that it gets rude.

The only thing questionable, to me, is the look on the tigers face!

In Australia the term "rooting" means the act of sex...
Thank you. I didn't know that. No wonder the tiger has that look on its face!

I didn't know until I watched a YouTube video. People "root" their Android phones which means clearing the default version of the software and replacing it with a stock build. He said if you said that you were "rooting" your phone to an average Australian you'd get some weird looks. Or they'd say "you're doing what to your phone?".
