Rowdy drunks may be fitted with ‘sobriety tags’ instead of jail terms

New government plans to cut down on drunken criminality could see offenders wearing electronic ‘sobriety tags’ in a bid to curb their excessive drinking.

The new legal orders, dubbed ‘Sosbos’, will come into force if the Conservative Party win next year’s general election and will see offenders being fitted with the tags for up to 120 days, as an alternative to custodial sentences.

The tags monitor sweat every 30 minutes and, if alcohol is detected, the device beeps to let the user known that the authorities will be alerted.

Offenders who manage to abstain from boozing will be let off with a fine, but if caught reoffending they face an $80 fine, community punishments, and a possible custodial term.

Pilot schemes have already been launched in London, Northamptonshire, and Cheshire.

US trials, where Lindsay Lohan was among those fitted with a device, suggested that they could slash re-offending by at least 14 per cent.

The Conservative Party will now use the tags as part of their election manifesto, pledging £15 million to deal with an initial 5,000 offenders annually.

David Cameron said the scheme would help rehabilitate thousands of binge drinkers, and help cut the current £8 billion that alcohol-related crime costs the UK

He added: ‘While overall crime has fallen under this Government, we need to do more.’

‘Sobriety orders will offer judges and magistrates a valuable new weapon in the fight against drink-related crime.’

‘The hope is that by forcing people to stay sober, they will continue their good habits once the tag is removed.’

Your thoughts on these electronic ‘sobriety tags’?

Do they have an electronic "Stupidity Tag"?

That could go for a lot of sober people, but it'd be great to try on the drunks first.

Would be an easy way to keep track of your Congressman's whereabouts.

Well, let's see.

Overall, the approval rating for Congress as a whole sits in the low teens.

And they STILL have not passed a Federal Budget, which is their primary job.

So, if you throw a handful of fresh dog(dirt) at a politician, and it sticks... oh well.
