Police attended his address near Wigan shortly after 2pm on Sunday after receiving phonecalls.

A spokesman for Greater Manchester Police said: 'Police were called to a house on Harswell Close in Orrell, Wigan, following a report of concern for welfare.

'Officers went to the address and found the body of a 31-year-old man.

'Inquiries have been launched, but there are not believed to be any suspicious circumstances surrounding his death.'

The 31-year-old had been out of the game since February, when he had his professional contract with Wakefield cancelled after testing positive for human growth hormone (HGH).

Newton - who played at hooker for rugby league giants Leeds Rhinos, Wigan Warriors and Bradford Bulls - was given a two-year suspension from the sport.

The Rugby Football League have issued a statement expressing sadness at Newton's death.

'We are deeply shocked and saddened by the news of Terry's untimely death,' said RFL chairman Richard Lewis.

'This is a personal tragedy and our thoughts are with Terry's partner, his children and his family at this terrible time.'

Newton scored 74 tries in 185 appearances for Wigan in arguably the best period of his career between 2000 and 2005.

And Warriors chairman Ian Lenagan said: 'Everyone at the club is devastated by the news.

'We would like to pass on our deepest condolences to Terry's family and friends at this time. Terry will be remembered as a great player of this club and rugby league in general and he was a larger than life character.'

Newton leaves behind his wife Stacey and two children.

R.I.P. Terry Newton. You were a great player

Very sad when people feel the only way out is to commit suicide. I feel badly for the family left behind that have to deal with this loss.

Weirdly he hung himself a few days before the Grand Final for the league that the clubs he played for are in. And one of the teams he played for (Wigan Warriors) actually won it

Guess he couldn't take it after he had his professional contract with Wakefield cancelled after testing positive for human growth hormone (HGH). So stupid to ruin your career taking this stuff.
