robin williams was one of the few people left in the world who i considered funnier than me. he was one of the standalone artists, notorious for suddenly starting to yammer about anything, constantly shifting gears. few people could make you laugh or cry as easily as he could.
’
he was only a few years older than me and i watched him, belushi, ackroyd and a whole mess of others just cutting their chops, some of them live, like belushi, john candy, bill murray and julia dreyfus at second city in the 70’s before they even did SNL, as a young amateur performance artist and aspiring fisheries biologist.
'
the fisheries career all fell apart while that crowd was peaking in the mid 80’s and i found myself on venice beach with a sidekick who played guitar and keyboards running around in a maroon pontiac that got dubbed the narcmobile with me and russell playing a real time jake and elwood between north hollywood and the beach with a very wild supporting cast.
’
to make a long story short, we were getting chased around by the same limousine service that dropped off the woman with the shot that killed john belushi, chased up a cul de sac near where he died about the same time that he died. russell was driving that night and decided he wanted to follow a limo and see who got out of it. they had us boxed in within minutes by two more and pushed us up a hill out of their way.
the sheer volume of cocaine that was being used by people in the entertainment industry at that time was boggling. some of the heavier hitters were rumored to be using a half million dollars a year.
belushi’s death was a wakeup call to that whole generation of players. especially robin williams and dan aykroyd, being as close to belushi as they were. they both kicked cocaine, cleaned up their acts considerably and did some of their best work in the years right after belushi died.
’
the notices of robin williams’ death have noticeably excluded a description of the death scene, with his death attributed to asphyxiation. he’s been struggling with depression, in rehab several times recently and www.heavy.com reported that he had hung himself, but that is not confirmed anywhere else that i’ve looked.
this is his wife’s statement to the NYT:
// Susan Schneider, the actor’s wife, released the following statement to the New York Times’ Dave Itzkoff:
“This morning, I lost my husband and my best friend, while the world lost one of its most beloved artists and beautiful human beings. I am utterly heartbroken. On behalf of Robin’s family, we are asking for privacy during our time of profound grief. As he is remembered, it is our hope that the focus will not be on Robin’s death but on the countless moments of joy and laughter he gave to millions.” //
