Do you maintain a sandbox test server for your website to try and install the modules ans stuffs like that before you try it on a live ennironment?

Back when I ran my own site, I ran modules on a test environment (and still get it screwed) but I found this increasingly difficult to maintain and make sense of.

Later, I turned over to professional module installation and support for my forum software. How about you? What are your experiences with sandbox set up? Do you use them? Or mess up?

Yes.

I have an Intel Nuc running proxmox so I can create VM's whenever I need, also have a exact replica of any live site to test stuff with.

I have sandbox domains but not an entirely separate server. I know I can do that with my computer and have an offline one but I don’t need that.
