A Florida parent has forced his son to stand on a street corner wearing a sandwich board showing his bad school grades, in an unusual form of punishment.

Michael Bell Jr, from Miami, came home with a report card which included failing grades in three of his subjects. He was also described by teachers as the class clown.

His father Michael Sr looked on as his seventh grade son walked on the street corner with the sign that read: Hey, I want to be a class clown. Is it wrong?

On the back it read: I'm in the 7th grade and got 3 F's. Blow your horn if there's something wrong with that.

Speaking to local media, Michael Jr said: I got an F in most of my classes so as a punishment I'm supposed to stay here for the whole spring break [half term].

He said that he wants to do better when he heads back to school after the holidays.

His father, on his discipline method said the punishment was a last resort.

I don't know any other way, I'm trying to reach him, he said. If I don't do anything, he's going to be a statistic and I don't want him to be a statistic.

Question: Do you think what this father did was right or wrong? Please explain your choice.

It seems like a rather over-the-top and generally spiteful thing to do.

However, I don't really know what else that kid's parents may have tried and it does seem to have worked

This is so very wrong. To humiliate your own child in public is admitting you (as a parent) don't care about him/her. Perhaps this kid has a learning disability and needs to be tested. Perhaps he needs a tutor to help him. What he doesn't need is to be treated like this!

I don't see anything wrong with it. How are you sure the father doesn't care? It was a last resort, the kid was a flunk, a clown, and headed on a backwards path to being a statistic. Something like this would certainly be a wake-up call. Also some families place a high standard on education. Like my family, for example. If I ever brought home those grades I would probably be thrown out of the house or something.

I think it's only fitting the father stand at another corner with a sign that read....

I think publicly humiliating my children is acceptable behavior and a valuable teaching tool. Honk your horn if you think I am wrong.

Then we can see who gets more people to honk their horn.

The silly assumption that all F grades earned by a student must because of laziness is stupid. Not all children fail due to choices they make. Some actually have difficulty learning but why go out of your way to think of these things when it's far easier to just assume no one can fail due to things beyond their control.

Not only do you fuck up their self worth and emotional well being, you just set them up to get bullied in school as well for it. This father clearly got an F in parenting. I suppose he should join his son then for that reason alone.
