Should students be required to wear uniforms at school? Why / Why not?

Pros:
-Help prevent gangs from forming on campus
-Encourage discipline
-Help students resist peer pressure to buy trendy clothes
-Help identify intruders in the school
-Diminish economic and social barriers between students
-Increase a sense of belonging and school pride

Cons:
-Violate a student's right to freedom of expression
-Are simply a Band-Aid on the issue of school violence
-Make students a target for bullies from other schools
-Are a financial burden for poor families
-Are an unfair additional expense for parents who pay taxes for a free public education
-Are difficult to enforce in public schools

School uniforms make people stand out so much... In public that is.
I've never had to wear one and while they are rather tidy-looking, they also have that air of oppressive conformity about them.

I think, with the advent of mobile phones, this has gone out the window somewhat.

Some that wear them seem to think they are set above the rest. I DID SAY SOME REMEMBER. Sure they look good but i also think it makes them into targets.
As for keeping gangs out of the schools really do you really think wearing a uniform can do that ?
Time to wake up and smell the coffee if you do.

I am for it in a way...

Back when I was in school, if you didn't have a certain type of clothing style, you were weird and often made fun of. Not everyone had wealthy parents to buy them expensive clothing.

It would help put an end to that sort of thing. Especially now that there is an apparent 'bullying' problem in all the school.
