Do you use the search feature before posting a new topic?

Yeah. All the time. Some people refer to it as necro posting. I do this because often when I wasn't in the habit. A lot of my new topics that I would post would be merged with the older existing topic.

Yes, because some forums have rules against making duplicate topics.

Nope. I've been here long enough to know what we have and don't have... And if we do have it, it's probably super old and only inactive/nonexistent members were discussing whatever it was. Posting a similar topic won't hurt anything since it's directed at a totally different audience.

but new members can post and feed off of older posts in the old topics and could spark up the discussion... :P

Same here. There are topics that members use different topic titles for. For example: "You have to see this" or "What do you think'? I'd rather just create a topic because my examples during a search may or may not show up for the topic I am posting. I'll take the chance of posting a new topic and if there is a duplicate, then sue me!

oh i will and you'll like it too! :P

I often use the search feature here particularly because there are lots and lots and lots of topics that already exists. Plus, Off Topix has been around for a few years, so it's difficult to find a topic that hasn't been posted already.

How do you narrow done a search result when the topic title has been changed by the original poster?

Topics already existing and feeling the need to search everything is only an issue if you decide to make it one. :P

It's ingrained in me, Nebulous.  I went to a lot of forums where it was frowned upon to start a new forum.  And often it was frowned upon to bump years-old threads instead of just starting a new one.  Some forum admins had some really weird rules/pet peeves, so you have to get used to new places.

Pretty much like others here have said; some forums have a Nazi approach to searching for an existing thread on a same or similar topic before creating a new one. If you create a duplicate topic on such a forum, you can expect a staff member to swoop in, all high and mighty, shoving a link to an already existing topic that hasn't seen any activity in years down your throat, screaming to use a Search function next time and threatening to ban you if you do it again.

At the same time, some of those forums also have a rule that prohibits resurrecting threads that are older than a certain date, so you can easily find yourself in a situation that you're not allowed to create a new thread because another thread on the same topic already exists, but you also can't post in that thread because it's too old for the staff member's taste.
