I noticed on some forums they a sepearate moderator for each forum who only have powers in that one forum.

How do you feel about these? Why not just have a few global moderators? If you trust the person enough to give them staff powers in a single forum, why not across the board? What if that section moderator was the only one online when some spam happened in forums he/she doesnt have powers to moderate?

That's why I have just one Global-Moderator who has powers in every section. That way he's able to get to some spam if I'm not there to take care of it.

Stupid idea in my opinion. Moderators should be trusted enough to moderate the whole board. I can understand if you ask your moderators to start threads in a certain forum section where they have skill or knowledge in that particular area. Limiting moderation, IMO, will end up in disaster.

Maybe if the moderator knows nothing about that specific section

Doesn't seem very likely though.

From what I've seen the moderator is supposed to keep conversation going in that specific section. It's stupid on small boards, but on large boards where there are also global moderators I don't really care if the admin wants to organise his staff like that.

I think for very themed forums (such as roleplay) that are very active, having section moderators isn't a very bad idea. Everybody is responsible for one section and if something goes wrong, you can pinpoint who's to blame.

I have section moderators on my forum and it has nothing to do with trust, honestly. They all have the ability to ban, so that isn't a problem if a section Mod is on when no one else is. It's more so to make sure they don't get overwhelmed trying to keep up with everything on and off the forum.

This is probably a good idea for an advertisement forum, but not so good for general chat. If it's general chat, you're probalby be best having just a global moderator. Like for example, you could have someone moderate the promotion section to make sure that no spam or warez links are posted, or have someone moderate packages and reviews to make sure those are being done properly and the staff are using the correct format as to how to best grade a person's site... but again, that's just advertisement forums. Section moderators are probably also best in other specialty forums as well such as graphics. Like you could have someone approve of someone's artwork and making sure it looks good and pointing out suggestions on what could be improved. So really, I think it's all the matter of what genera of forum it is.

I have section moderators; they are my most active posters!

I would be lost without them. I don't award everybody global moderating status, mainly because I like a complex hiearchy in place.

In the case of a specialty forum, sure, but for a normal discussion forum, it's an unnecessary division of power and responsibility.

I disagree that its uncessary; I've come across far too many forums where no division of power makes the running of a section or entire forum a major pain. Not only that, on smaller forums, it gives section moderators something to aspire (knowing that their dedication and hard work will be rewarded by a promotion)
