Should the law punish those who use force to defend themselves against criminal acts?

Nope. Self defense should be just that--self defense.....

Within reason. If you killed a theif in your house, then I would say that it's punishable by law.

Restraint!

I used to work with a guy who killed intruders.. They were gang members.

He didnt get punished by law. He had every right to shoot them.

However the gang started doing drive by's on his house and leaving notes saying they are going to die..

So he moved two states away as he feared for his family's saftey.

If a person is just robbing you, and has no intention of hurting you? No, self defense should not be used.

If the person has the intent to severely hurt or kill you, then I find nothing wrong with self defense.

what counts as self deffence killing them or breaking every bone in there body.

we can't become to reliant upon the self-defense argument... cause what happens if a woman kills a man for something stupid, then she can just say, Oh, it was self-defence, he came after me whatever spiel.

You should be able to fight back but once you have won you should just restrain them and not kick the hell out of them.

Um.. What?

If someone is robbing you, then you need to whoop their ass and get your stuff back.

+1.

You have no real idea what their intentions are until they actually start to take your stuff etc.

Sorry couldn't resist.

Seriously though, My mate has been mugged twice and both times he wouldn't give them his phone and chose to run, worked out in the first time but in the second time, He pretty much got owned.

Self defence is better than running or giving in.
