Should the law punish those who use force to defend themselves against criminal acts? Why or why not?

No. Funnilly enough this one the subject of the court case I was on this week.

If you are being attacked you should have the right to defend yourself.

Smooth has the right of it

Would it be fair to say that anyone could use the excuse that a life was taken because it was done in self defense? Would it also be fair to say if people who thought they could claim self defense and get away with it would not cause an increase in vigilantes who take the law into their own hands?

I'm with Smooth.

Yes, it probably would. But it's ridiculous to be judged for defending yourself.

Of course everyone should be able to defend themselves. I think everyone can agree with that, it's the line between defending yourself and taking matters in your own hands that people disagree about.

I agree with the majority posted here, if you are being attacked, and afraid of something happening to you, you should be able to act upon that, obviously if you murder them it's a different thing but if i were being attacked and had my knife I'd just stab them or something like that.

Using resonable force. If someone breaks your windows and you shoot and kill them, then you should be charged. But if you just tackle him and he breaks his arm or whatever, then no, you shouldn't be charged.
