A video of Jaxon Smith drumming to the Foo Fighters song The Pretender has led to his first TV appearance after it was watched more than 500,000 times on YouTube.

Jaxon Smith appeared on America's Today Show on NBC on Tuesday after a video of him confidently drumming away to the Foo Fighters anthem went viral.

According to his father, the seven-year-old from Calgary in Canada taught himself to drum from watching live DVD concerts of bands like Foo Fighters, Rush, Muse. No one in his family plays the drums and he has never had a drum teacher.

His energetic online performance, which shows concentration and rhythm despite his young age, has captivated viewers, prompting some to speculate on his future career.

But despite his musical talent, Jaxon reveals he has other ambitions.

I would like 30 years more of drumming and then I can be a hockey player, he said.
