Serious Relationship

If you were in a serious relationship and planning to marry that person, do you have the right to know everything about that person's past?

Hmmm, tough question. I guess you are marrying the person, not the person's past. Sometimes things are better left unknown. I know Ive been with people and found out things that I wished I hadn't. Ignorance is bliss.

However, building on what Nebulous said, it might be wise not to exercise that right.

Although nothing else should matter, as long as the two people love each other. I do think that there should be no hesitation if a question is asked or something pops up, because this person is the one that is supposed to know everything about you and the one that you can always trust and talk to anything about. You have to be fully open to each other and know or learn all about each other; all rocks are overturned in the relationship.

My answer: The only thing I would think I have a right to know is if there is a criminal past. Something this person did that would have an impact on the future of the relationship. Other than that, the past is the past and should be left there.

You don't have that right imo. If you're marrying someone you're accepting who he/she is. If being mysterious about their past is part of that you can't force them to tell you.



Personally I'd never propose to a girl that's mysterious about her past (particularly dating-wise). I could never truly trust a person who doesn't trust me enough to tell me about it.
