Should registered sex offenders be allowed on a school campus if they have reason to be there?

(maybe they have a child who goes to the school

or maybe they are a hired contractor doing work (for example) fixing the plumbing or electrical)

depends on the crime they committed but i would say they are a 'higher risk' to others......if they had commited crimes against children i would not feel comfortable if i knew they were a round

for the record i have no kids of my own but thro my partner i have 'inherited' a gaggle of grand kids..........if any of the little ones ever got harmed i would be devastated...............as far as im concerned pedophiles are the lowest of the low and need to be thrown in a room of women armed with blunt and rusty pen knives

also if they are a contractor they could be made to do work outside of school hours.....in the UK they would have to go thro a CRB check before they would be allowed to work at a school anyway

I don't agree with the general sex offender mark people seem to get in the US. As if flashing your junk when you're in college and drunk is the same as raping a 5 year old girl...

For the rest I pretty much agree with Beowulf. It depends on the crime, I'd say pedophiles are obviously a definite no.

If they have a reason to be there, they have a reason to be there. It's as simple as that. If they have committed a crime, and have done their time, they have fulfilled the punishment for the crime. While some people may re-offend, if they've fulfilled the obligation of the law, and they have legitimate business (working, as an example is a positive and constructive output), they shouldn't be impeded.

If people have a problem with this arrangement, the law needs to be changed to have a more severe impact in terms of punishment for those who have committed such crimes. The post-incarceration 'stamp' they will carry for the rest of their lives is an extended punishment enough (perhaps the enforcement of making sure that 'stamp' is clear, and apparent, and well-known should be enhanced) - but they should not be restrained from practical activity such as employment and social interaction, otherwise such pressures tend to force or psycho-socially legitimise re-offense in such individuals anyway, thus actually increasing the risk the person is to society artificially.

Not all paedophiles are male; several, actually are female, there have been quite a few high-profile ones in the United States in recent decades and years.

I agree with this, a lot of the prosecution has become ridiculous - people are getting the 'stamp' for no good reason (at least as superficially reported...), and the Judicial system has been promoting a regime of misandry, where a double-standard is leading to the persecution of Men, while Women that are mutually involved in the 'crime' or similar acts are going free, or at least being treated more leniently.

This topic was inspired by something I saw on the news last night:

In it's second 3-2 vote in the last 4 months, the Placer Hills Union School District board upeld its policy adopted back in October to not allow parents of convicted sex crimes on their campuses.

Surprisingly most schools already allow those on the federal registry of sexual offenders - known as Megan's Law list- to apply for the opportunity to be on campuses on a case by case basis. State law also does not prevent such visits.

The policy was revisited at Thursday night's meeting at the request of several teachers who work in the district. Their sympathy was with the children who have sex offenders as parents who can no longer attend school functions with their child.

In attendance at the board meeting was a detective with the Placer County Sheriff and the Placer County Assistant District Attorney.

the whole story of the ring

but the fact is that the majority of child abusers are male

That all depends on why they are registered.

Some people are a registered sex offender just for stopping on the side of the road to take a leak.

Something like that is just stupid, but it happens to a lot of people. They didn't commit an actual sex crime, but are still labeled that way.
