Should college be free for everyone?

Talk about how this would affect our economy and job competition.

I'm with Nebulous on this one, other countries have figured it out yet we're behind. Having a higher education can open up so many job opportunities and could help us get on the road to a better economy. Plus if healthcare was free, think of all the people who could be saved since they wouldn't have to worry about paying a huge fee just to go to the er/hospital/doctors. So many people don't get regular check ups because it's expensive. I had to go to the doctor about a few weeks ago because I have a stye and all the doctor said was "Well we can't do anything about it here. Go to this office to get treatment" and I had to pay $80!

We’re in such a backwards place, aren’t we? Lots of people die early because they don’t have the resources to pay doctor bills.

Actually now that I think about it, I’ve heard junior college is free around here in California at the moment which is cool I suppose.

Nothing is free. SOMEONE is paying for it. That's me, your aunt, your uncle, your grandpa, etc... I'm already taxed to death in the state/county/township where I live so adding more taxes so that someone can sign up for square dancing as an elective is really a sour note with me.

I don't know about whether it should be free, but the issues of cost should be addressed to prevent the problem that has arisen with incredibly high student debt. People call for student debt in the US to be cancelled but that doesn't resolve the actual problem, which is why that debt got so high to begin with which is from high costs and predatory student loans. It's like removing the water from the Titanic but not fixing the hole that let the water get inside it to begin with; eventually you'll be back to where you started.

"Tuition Charges" were introduced in the UK about 20 years ago and the maximum is currently just over £9,000.
Loans are available but in reality, for a youngster from a poorer family, that puts university education out of reach.

Exactly. Every time I've ever went they charge thousands of dollars that I can't afford to pay. Unless it's life or death, it's not worth the price.

Every time you went to the doctor it was thousands of dollars? Never went for just a check-up?

As for college they do have grants programs still around for the ones that are wanting to go to college, and a lot of companies/organizations offer them just got to know where to look and gotta put some effort in finding them. Even if it was "free" how is the instructors and what not supposed to be paid, which goes back to being taxed even higher because someone has to pay for it so how is it really free if someone has to pay for it?

In a messed up scenerio say if someone goes to the store buys 200+ groceries granted dont want anyone to starve but in an economic sense would everyone pay for whatever that person wanted, Yea I believe in helping others out and what not but to Classify something as "Free" is not really free if someone is paying for it. It doesnt just go away.

As for Doctors: If someone has insurance and goes to the dr to get checkups or "Preventatives" that goes towards your deducible so you save money when somethingg major comes up.

I do agree the costs could elevate a bit and what not over all I don't agree they should be "free" as nothing is free in the world.

Atleast $80.00 is better than $80,000 or even $8,000 :)
