Do you think because of property and state taxes, should parents have to pay out more money for the lunches so their kids can eat?

Should the lunches be covered? Why or why not?

Absolutely! Even if property and state taxes weren't a thing, it is fucking WILD that schools - of all places - have this mentality that you need to pay for your child's meal. Schools are a safespace for many kids who have a shitty home life. In a lot of cases, the parents might live paycheck to paycheck or be in poverty to the point where their kids don't get a meal at home. If anything, they get snacks - scraps. Schools should be the one stable point in a kid's life where they can reliably get a meal without any worry about 'will I get a normal meal, or a pb & j sandwich because my family is poor?' or in other cases, 'will I get food at all?'

and you know, fuck the schools that give a pb & j sandwhich and act like "at least we are giving them food." No, you're putting a big fat target on their back and shaming them for not having money. You're giving them pity food.

A long time ago in a job far far away.....

At the time, our two daughters were in middle (jr high) school, given the scale for income versus family size and 'cost of living' and so on, we received and used the option for "reduced price" school lunches.

My boss came in one year and gave me a printout that cheerfully informed me that I would receive a Two Percent raise at the beginning of the next fiscal year.

A few months later I took the boss lady a similar cheerfully informative printout from the school district.

Given the current cost of living, we now qualified for FREE School Lunches, as my salary had not kept up with inflation.

They should be covered for the under privileged. Kids deserve to grow up with healthy meals, with their long life ahead of them.

I understand not covering meals for the more privileged though as that costs taxpayers money
