So today, one of my flatmates pinned up a flyer on the communal noticeboard that our flats and room's will be checked on Monday. Keep in mind that we're 18 - 21, and are attending University.

So I wanted to ask, do you think that student accommodation should be checked, aside from safety purposes? Or do you think that we could be trusted to keep things clean and safe?

Wow that sucks. IMO they should give you some more privacy. I'd be furious if they checked my room.

I live in rented accomodation, it gets checked every six months. It sucks! I hate it!

But sadly, it's their place, it's their rules.

Work hard. Make lots of money. Buy your own place. And you'll never have to put up with this crap again!

When I was growing up we had inspections once a year. We lived in govt. funded housing (housing authority) because my mom was a poor single mom.

When you rent a regular place, they dont do any checking. They dont do it at the universities either.

They check here.

When house prices shot up and housing lists grew exponentially, they suddenly found a glut of people were renting.

However, many people couldn't (and still can't) afford to pay extortionate rents. So they'd fall behind on their rent and receive notice to quit.

In retaliation, they'd trash the house.

Now, all rented properties are subject to 3 or 6 monthly checks.

Well technically they can enter the residence whenever they want, they just have to give a 24 hour notice.

Yes, same here. It's a pain in the bum!

I don't mind safety checks but I'm out all Monday, and I'm not leaving my room open all day ¬_¬

No, don't leave it unlocked!

They have a master key.

At least the University gave students ample warning. I believe they have the right to check as it's their property. They want to make sure safety regulations are being followed before a tragic accident may happen. I applaud them for wanting to ensure the safety of all students.

I worked on a maintenance crew at the college I went to.

I didn't like the dorm room inspections (I believe they were done once a semester but honestly don't remember) until I had to help fix something some students had done.

They had decided that the best possible course of action they could engage in was to cut a hole in the wall between their rooms so they could pass stuff back and forth. Evidently they had made the hole the hole in the fall and it wasn't discovered until the spring (I still think somebody had snitched). They had concealed it behind posters so they knew it wasn't something the college administration would approve of.

The students were moved to other rooms, and their parents sent a bill for the repairs. Which I'm sure thrilled them to no end as well.

So from where I sit, I would have to make the argument that not all 18 to twenty somethings make good decisions regarding their treatment of their housing units when in the collegiate setting.

That's why you have contracts saying you have to pay for the damage you caused. There's no need to barge in there when the student is still living there imo.

It's not only damage that is the point of an inspection. They look for alcohol, drugs, and weapons to name a few. Again, they own the facility students live in not the other way around.

The fact that they own it doesn't mean I should just agree with their actions. This topic is about your opinion about it, whether they can or can't really doesn't have much to do with that.

I think it's disgusting they deny people a little fun. It's not their business whether they drink alcohol or do drugs as long as it doesn't bother anyone else. So if there are no complaints, I find it a very unnecessary invasion of their privacy.

Where any place in this thread does it say it is their business whether students drink or do drugs? The only thing that is their business is enforcing the rules that students have no alcohol and/or drugs in their rooms. If a student should die in their room from a drug overdose or from drinking too much and the police find drugs and/or alcohol in that room, who do you think the parents are going to hold responsible?

Definition of invasion of privacy: The wrongful intrusion into a person's private activities by other individuals or by the government. Tort law protects one's private affairs with which the public has no concern against unwarranted exploitation or publicity that causes mental suffering or humiliation to the average person. If you would please, Cranos, now explain to me how by doing a room check this or any University is guilty of invasion of privacy?

In the student accommodation that I'm living in, we're allowed alcohol but not drugs. We have knives, which can be classed as a weapon, as we're in self-catered accommodation.

The only way to find someone's drugs (or weapons) is to go through all their clothing, including underwear and all their stuff. It's not something you can find on first glance like damage. I'm still of the opinion that the entire thing is a major waste of time and unnecessarily annoying the residents. Everyone knows it in advance anyway, hiding the illegal stuff is very easy. Also, how can it possibly be the landlord's fault that students do drugs? They're adults and responsible for themselves.

Also, I forgot you can't drink alcohol under the age of 21 in the US. Since you can drink it here at the age of 16, I found that a ridiculous rule, but considering it's illegal I can somewhat understand it.
