I merge because I get the nagging feeling of having seen the thread before...

If I see a thread that's similar to an existing one, I'd merge it. If someone creates a thread that is of a similar subject to one created that's been without posts for almost a year (and no point bumping it), I can let it stay there.

Same here except I do a search first to make sure.

If they're directly similar, like a topic about iron spoons and one about silver spoons, then I would merge them. But stuff like a real example like a couple threads I made on another forum with one about a post exchange and one about a link exchange should not be merged imo. They're quite different even if the names are similar.
