Were you ever smacked as a child?

Do you believe in smacking children to punish them?

Do you think telling a child off is better than physically punishing them?

How much smacking is acceptable in your opinion?

How much smacking is too much?

...

Yes.

Not to punish, as a measure to avert a disaster, yes, it has its place.

As hard as it is, yes. It takes more of an investment, especially in one-on-one relations, and co-ordination with the other parent.

None, except to avert a disaster (like kiddo is about to throw a knife at his brother, say...[hey it happens, I have some pretty good knife-dodging skills as a result of my brother])

Physical violence in any relationship, particularly the parenting one ends up replacing actual positive and constructive development of the relationship and the persons involved, thus any regime of smacking kids around is too much.

Yes.

Sorta.

Depends on the child I think... There's a time and a place for everything right?

Not too much.

Too much.

Were you ever smacked as a child?

Yes but with a belt not a hand.

Do you believe in smacking children to punish them?

No. Smacking leaves both physical and emotional scars that can last a lifetime.

Do you think telling a child off is better than physically punishing them?

No. By doing that you are teaching children that it's okay to tell people off. That's why so many kids disrespect elders.

How much smacking is acceptable in your opinion?

Zero. This behavior can lead a child to become a physical abuser when they grow to adulthood.

How much smacking is too much?

Any smacking is too much.

Some elders might need a telling off. There's respect and disrespect, which are two different things, and apparently might need a different thread to talk about.

Telling a child off for misbehaviour and choosing an action that should not be reinforced is a positive first step toward establishing a replacement behaviour that is needed. What has to happen is follow-through, though. Once the behaviour deflection has happened, it must be supported with criteria that amounts to a constructive pursuit for the child to follow instead. Unfortunately, in lieu of hitting a child, screaming and shouting replace it, which bruise the psyche if not the body, and either way damage is done. A positive-constructive approach must be built. That isn't accomplished by tearing a child down.
