Smart-everything?

We now have smart lights, smart doors, and even smart toasters. The current trend seems to be to connect absolutely everything in your household to the internet.

What's the most absurd thing that you have seen that was "smart"? And do you think eventually everything will be connected to the internet?

Garage door opener is the last thing I know of that my neighbor had installed. Do these people with all these 'smart' items realize that nothing will work if the internet goes down?

Maybe my television and xbox but I mostly prefer to keep everything not connected to the Internet. I don't know everything thinks the Internet is reliable all of the time because you can't do anything when your provider has to shut it down and do maintenance or if it goes out for whatever other reason.

One I discovered recently that I find pointless, are smart monitors. They're monitors that you can watch your streaming services on, but... why do I need to spend $700 on a monitor to watch Netflix and Disney+ on? The fact that monitors are always a companion piece to a computer makes this concept kind of pointless. to me.

Why buy an expensive monitor to watch Netflix on when your computer is already capable of watching Netflix, and you can get a "dumb" monitor for half the price?

Smart doorbells, smart garage door openers, smart cameras...all terrible ideas. Easily hacked and they connect to a central service, who can view and access your footage. If you must have a camera doorbell or security cameras, or a smart garage door opener, get closed-circuit ones, ones that you run yourself and store the logs and footage for yourself. All of these smart devices are just another way to collect data in the guise of making everything easier.

It irks me when I hear "Alexa, remind me to record…" Just get out pen & paper & do it yourself There's also the lack of security for hacking. Even when you turn them off, they can turn themselves back on & record what you are saying. That then is listened to by bigwig corporations.

I think everything will be connected, however I will not get everything with internet in it. Don't need the stuff clogging up my bandwidth or leave me open to hacking.

I guess it's not too bad if there are alternative methods of still doing that particular action as a backup. But yeah, things that can only be operated using the internet is definitely a bad thing to rely on.

I'm not going to lie, I am one of those people. With things like shopping lists, it's just easier because you can note it down immediately when you remember it and check it from your phone when you're out and about. A lot easier than having to carry around a note, especially if you forget it at home.

I definitely wouldn't want a smart car. There are some people that are really good at hacking into stuff and I wouldn't want them to hack into any smart car I was driving. 'Cause they can can hack into your car, making you crash your car and injure yourself. Not to mention you'd be held liable for such an accident.......I wouldn't know how you'd prove your car was hacked.

You yourself probably couldn’t do it, but they have people who know how to conduct digital forensics for stuff like this.

Slightly off-topic but it's going to be interesting to see how self-driving cars are going to be handled in the future. If the car crashes, who's responsible?

Sounds complicated. Basically, it depends on the situation which I think is a fair view of who is at fault but it's going to end up with a lot of court cases in the future

I was wondering that also. What are they going to do when there is a car crash when self driving cars are involved? I agree, I think there are going to be a lot more court cases in the future.

Not sure what others pay for insurance but my state is a no-fault insurance state. The annual insurance premium is $1,287.

It's funny I should come across this thread as just the other day when I was out, I went past a local optician's and saw in the window an advertisement for smart glasses.

This was the first time I had heard about smart glasses and it did get me wondering how smart glasses would work or how they are different to just normal glasses.
