What are your views on smoking and smokers?

Should smokers be allowed to smoke wherever they want? Why or why not?

i'm a smoker wanting to quit and i say unequivocally that smoking should be banned indoors in all public buildings and people in private residences should smoke outside. even outside, smokers should always respect the air quality of the people near them and make sure they're downwind of people when they do.

I detest the act of smoking, although I view the people as having and carrying on a nasty, disgusting, highly unattractive habit. I have asthma, and even the smell of smoke can make it flare up, so to be around someone who's smoking makes me sick to my stomach. It's not beneficial in any way, shape, or form, and I see no positive to the matter, even if you don't end up getting cancer or some other disease attributed to smoking.

However, I believe that smokers should be able to smoke outside or in their homes as long as they're not renting. If they are renting, they should abide by the renters agreement and smoke where it is deemed okay. I don't think that they should be allowed to smoke inside public or privately owned buildings UNLESS the private owner allows them to smoke.

I remember hearing a news story back in the day about waitresses and other bar/restaurant staff getting cancer and other health problems by the thousands. Many people desperate for work or cannot seem to land a job anywhere else had no choice but to work in that smokey establishment. Now they don't have to be subjected to such unhealthiness.

There was a story on the news just today about a petition potentially going on the ballot to prevent people from smoking on the beaches. This was mainly because many of the smokers were unable to dispose of their cigarette butts properly, and they proceeded to show how many were littered in the sand and in the water. It was absolutely disgusting and it just goes to show how some people can ruin things for everyone. Beaches shouldn't be littered with anything, much less cigarettes. I just think that these things need to be eradicated, but I know that won't happen.

Now THAT pisses me off. Smokers are not "unable" to dispose of their butts properly, they're just too damn lazy. When I'm out in public, if there is nowhere for me to dump my cigarette butt, then I crush it out on the bottom of my shoe and it goes in my pocket until I get home and toss it in the trash.

It definitely is lazy, rude, and I wonder if they leave cigarette butts lying around on the floor in their own houses. I realize this isn't just a trait that cigarette smokers do, but rather humans in general are disgusting slobs. It just so happens to be that a lot of people who smoke on the beaches are too lazy to dispose of their trash in a proper receptacle. Because of their bad habits, they have contributed to the reason why they won't be able to smoke in a certain place anymore.

i smoke non-filtered cigarettes that i field strip if there's no place appropriate to dispose them and often end up with a pocket full of other people's filter butts working cleanup after events.

I know that there are people out there who do appreciate keeping the scenery pretty and who do abide by the no littering laws, but there are plenty out there who simply do not and it's terrible. I can't imagine why anyone would just flick a piece of trash onto the ground when more often than not there are plenty bins and places to dispose of cigarettes around. It's pure and utter laziness.

the stories i could tell you about the messes left behind by high holy hippies at rainbow gatherings or after a festival. woo! i found two boxes of informational media from the leonard peltier defense committee, including a couple of thousand signatures on the petition for clemency in what had to be at least a ton of trash we (the group i was caravaning with) hauled out of the humboldt forest near elko, NV in 1989 after the gathering.

we had hauled at least 2 tons of food in that we had salvaged from las vegas dumpsters or picked up in exchange for labor at a clean food bank called the gleaners that sent trucks around every day to get the shrink before it got shitcanned.

after the dead's last alpine valley gig in 1989, my co-pilot and i stuffed my motor home to the roof with discarded camping gear. it had rained hard most of the weekend and people would just drive away from their stuff leaving, behind high dollar brand name gear. coleman coolers stuffed full of meat, cheese and beer we took down to chicago and gave away there in grant park on venetian night.

the cops loved that maneuver. they gave us a little shit when we set up, but as soon as we convinced them we weren't selling it, they totally did an about face and started watching out for us to make sure we didn't get thugged by somebody.

it certainly was downhill from there, not just for the dead but the entire raising of consciousness movement of the 60's. more and more people sold out to the neo-liberal fascist agenda of the oligarchs and more and more people are turning barbaric in the underclasses. i haven't been able to go near a rainbow gathering since 1999, that scene has degenerated so badly.

part of the bargain god made with the children of israel was that if we ever found ourselves oppressed by overwhelming tyranny, he would come back and set that straight. how much worse do the christian united states, the zionist jews and iranian moslems need to get before he keeps his promise to those of us who have remained faithful to the doctrine of love common to all three faiths?

The hospital where I work has banned smoking. No smoking on hospital property including in cars parked on their property. You know the problem with this? There is no one enforcing this ban. I often leave work and walk into a cloud of smoke. I also have asthma and I will automatically start coughing. I have tried holding my breath but the air is so full of smoke, I gave up. Thank you to all the smokers who ignore the ban and are slowly killing me! :@

same can be said about people leaving their food wrappers, plastic water bottles, soda/beer cans, ect... now when you go to the beach you're not allowed to bring water or food, thank you... (;

I understand that and made mention to the fact that it's not just cigarette smokers who litter, but okay. Regular trash like wrappers don't tend to leave toxic trash lying around where a baby or a dog or another animal could come and pick it up and eat it. Yes, litter can be dangerous, but not to the extent that a discarded cigarette could, especially if it landed on a piece of driftwood out here and it set fire if it was still smoldering.

but yes, smoking is a horrible and unhealthy habit and/or addiction...

kills or help kills people everyday...

I am no smoker and never will be. But if a restaurant or business owner wants to allow smoking inside that is there right and the government needs to take a hike and butt out. If people dont like it do not buy from that business or work for that company.

that is the american way. everybody is free to choose for themselves over everything they can claim title to within the framework of our criminal and civil codes. if you don't like somebody's rules you do not have the right to get the government to change them to suit your needs and wants if the business establishment or personal residence is otherwise in compliance with the law. the recent hobby lobby ruling establishes that very clearly.

if you want to go demonstrate with the westboro baptist church at robin williams' funeral you have every right to do it, but if you object to what they're doing, your only real option to do anything about it under american rule of law is shag your tail out there and counter-demonstrate. that's upheld by brown vs phelps.

you don't like, it don't look. robin wouldn't have it any other way.

The reason why smoking is banned in public places is because of second hand smoke. When someone is in the presence of a smoker then they get to smoke too regardless if the cigarette is in their mouth or not. The reason why it's justified to strip the rights of smokers to smoke in places such as stores, restaurants, etc. is because the right to do so strips someone of the right to not inhale your smoke via secondhand smoke. A smoker can't fully control where their smoke is going and who inhales it no matter how much they might think they can.

Smoking is a filthy destructive and addictive habit that hasn't one benefit to its name. I don't see why any rights should be granted to smokers if that right is going to infringe on the rights of others namely the right to not get smoke into your lungs via being around smokers in enclosed public areas such as a store, restaurant, etc.. The right to smoke in your own home, car, or outside doesn't infringe on the rights of non smokers so I don't see why you shouldn't be able to.

It is a privately owned business. It is not the governments place to tell the business who should smoke or not smoke. Dont like smoke go somewhere else. I would bet by this time if it had been left up to the free market there would be places for smokers to go to and shop or eat and there would be stores who cater to smokers as well. The only place government should be telling people they have no rights to smoke is in government buildings and property.

Before long with this slippery slope government will deem something you enjoy doing or eating in public will be banned also. How dare we make others suffer and endure the smell of popcorn that make some sick to the stomach!

The smell of popcorn doesn't make people fat and has no scientifically proven negative effect on the people who eat it or sit around others who do, so that example is over exaggerated and without merit. I can understand, however, if a private business who owns the land and the establishment creates a rule that smoking is allowed, that non-smokers should simply not visit those establishments.

Neither does man made global warming but yet the government wants to infringe on our rights and has convinced some that its true even though it is not. Believe me if government or a determined radical group wants to convince enough idiots that smelling popcorn is bad for you it will happen regardless of scientific proof. And in todays America the minority must be catered to regardless if it destroys the rights of the majority.
