Students suspended from school for snorting Smarties

A group of parents have been left outraged after their children were suspended from school for snorting sweets.

The three children, from Marshall Middle School in New Mexico, were suspended after allegedly inhaling ground-up Smarties, a form of confectionery commonly known in the UK as Fizzers.

it depends...

does it really matter if it's candy or paint?

they're in school and schools have no tolerance of acting out and distracting others, in class or on school grounds...

and we don't know the whole story, we don't know if they were already warned for their misconduct, or if they were already trouble makers...

on a side-note, answering a question with a image/meme is not answering, therefor a pointless post...

In a letter written to the parents, the school has said that the suspension is the result of the children’s ‘possession of drugs’, despite the fact that they are not known to possess any narcotic qualities.

Kelly Cook, the mother of suspended pupil Andrew Stonelake, has said that she was shocked at the decision, and that her son had simply crushed the sweets into a powder that he could then blow at his friends, describing his behaviour as ‘horseplay’.

She added that her son and his friends had not received any prior warnings about using the sweets while at school.

Please explain the following:
1) The suspension is the result of the children’s ‘possession of drugs’. What drugs?

2) Do you see anywhere above the children were snorting Smarties?

3) Where's the prior warning if Smarties are not allowed at school?

not sure, i don't know what the rules of that school is...

but it does seem a bit weird and fishy, just like any other thing that goes on in this crazy and sick world...

They were probably suspended because candy is not allowed at school under Michelle Obama's school food regulations. But the school administration didn't want to end up all over the news because of that, so they did this.

And ended up all over the news anyway.

i have a feeling that i don't have all the facts here, so, no, no one can really put forth an accurate opinion about this...

a drug doesn't necessarily have to be a narcotic either...

sugar, caffeine, tobacco and alcohol are considered a drug but not a narcotic substance...

these kids were most likely trying to sniff crushed up candy which was powder, which can have an negative affect to the brain, which is the definition of a drug...

just because the children didn't receive an "official warning", doesn't mean they didn't get warned or to be told to stop or not bring candy to school... or maybe it's against the rules of the school to bring such items? which would be considered contraband... you must consider what they were trying to do and if they caused a scene or not... if they disturbed others then it might be worth a suspension...

was it a harsh punishment for the crime? yes...
