Splitting Bills

With friends or even family, do you ever split the bill? And if so, do you do it evenly between the people that are there or do individuals pay for what they had?

When I'm with my friends, we each pay for what we had.

When I'm with my girlfriend, it's usually whoever had the cheaper train journey who pays the bill .

I buy my own stuff with friends or I pay for everyone and they get the tab next time, same with my family.
