Sports commentators?

Worst? All of them. They are unnecessary and annoying, and they yap on about pointless crap that doesn't need to be talked about.

This sums up my opinion.

I've been in the press box or media center and listened to the live over the air commentary going out over radio, and on a couple of occasions, TV including the 'cable TV sports network'.

I don't care what sport they are talking about, or whether they are paid for by the home team, the visitors, or some faceless network somewhere on the coast......

... when the microphone is off, or at least it is supposed to be, they are usually, not all, but most of them, the biggest piles of jerkwad slime you've heard in your life.

And TV was the worst of the breed.

They'd parade around in the media center like demigods. Elbow to the front of the line to get the free food. Shout down anybody that disagreed with their freely offered, and usually unwanted, opinion about absolutely anything. And then, and then, when they were 'on the air' they'd demand total silence and absolute respect to them because "THEY WERE ON TV".

There were a couple of exceptions. A couple of the guys with radio's MRN (the Motor Racing Network) were actually pleasant to deal with, and helpful. One of them even asked Kyle Petty to hang on when he was done interviewing him so "this guy from local radio" could ask him a question or two. That's class.

I won't go into any details about the guys from "TV cable network sports" except to say this, you know my opinion about career politicians. Take that, and take maybe half a step back toward the rest of humanity.

Best sports commentators (past & present)?
Worst?

-Best past commentators: Pat Summerall, Vin Scully, Bob Criqui, Paul Page, Murray Walker and John Madden come to mind; so does the late Tom Mees, come to think of it.
-Best present commentators (soccer/football): Arlo White, Ian Darke, Ian Crocker, Lee Dixon, Graeme Le Saux, Martin Tyler and John Champion
-Best present commentators (everywhere else): Leigh Diffey, David Hobbs & Steve Matchett...period, full stop.

-Worst commentators: Nebulous Buck & Gus Johnson, for starters...Darrell Waltrip as well, come to think of it....

"Holy Cow!"
Anybody remember Harry Caray?

The man was almost as good at baseball as he was at drinking, but he was larger than life, and no mistake.

From Harry Caray's 1972 yearbook:
Toward the end of the diary, on Dec. 24, comes the kicker. After spending at least 354 of the previous 357 days in bars (DePorter counted 61 different tap houses) Caray writes, in a bold hand, “Vacation in Acapulco. Then “Vacation” every day until the year runs out.
