The St. Louis Rams have cut Michael Sam, the first openly gay player drafted by an NFL team.

The seventh-round pick has been outspoken and confident as his progress was watched as closely as any rookie in the league. He has been cheered by athletes and celebrities. In the end, the defensive end couldn't make a team stocked with pass-rushers.

"I want to thank the entire Rams organization and the city of St. Louis for giving me this tremendous opportunity and allowing me to show I can play at this level. I look forward to continuing to build on the progress I made here toward a long and successful career," Sam said in a statement posted on Twitter.

"The most worthwhile things in life rarely come easy, this is a lesson I've always known. The journey continues," he said.

Sam still has a chance to get picked up by another team or to make the Rams' practice squad.

Hopefully he'll find somewhere else to be. You win some you lose some.

If Michael Sam had been straight, this topic would likely never existed nor the articles about him in fact we probably for the most part wouldn't even knew he existed.

I am half surprised the " I only got cut because I am gay" card hasn't gotten thrown out there yet. Perhaps it's too early for that card to get put out there?

IRVING, Texas – The Cowboys have decided to waive defensive end Michael Sam.

The practice squad player who joined the team on Sept. 3, spent the first seven weeks of the season on the 10-man squad and never made it to the 53-man roster.

Sam, the first openly-gay player in the NFL, was a seventh-round draft pick of the Rams. He spent all of the offseason and training camp with the St. Louis before being released and signed to the Cowboys’ practice squad.

The move opens a spot for linebacker Troy Davis, a second-year pro from Central Florida who worked out with the team on Monday.

Is this happening because he's a bad player or because he's gay?

It was a business decision; there's only so many players that a team can carry and if they've got too many players at a certain position, someone's bound to get cut.

FWIW, however, I wouldn't be surprised if Sam were to head for Canada and try to get a spot w/a CFL team. Given his build and skill sets - and the fact that the CFL plays on a wider field w/12 players a side than in the NFL - he could do very well up there.
