Are you strict when running a forum? And is having a strict forum a good thing or not?



For me, I am fairly strict when running my forum and believe it's beneficial to keep it under control, especially when people post threads on it. However, forums that are really strict isn't a good thing because in them, you'd see half of the threads being either locked, trashed or deleted. I know this from personal experience as I was on the Game Maker Community forums where the staff there were really picky on what threads should be posted there.

I'm a very laid-back administrator, and I usually let the members post what they want or say what they want without any hassle. But there all comes a point where a admin must step in and being a little strict on keen topics such as debating or even public pictures. Never really been on any strict forums myself.

The one thing I liked best about Off Topix when I first joined was the very laid-back atmosphere. I had come from a forum where it was so strict that members (myself included) were afraid to even post after awhile. If they didn't like what you posted, they would delete your post and give you a PM warning. If you got a second PM warning, they then banned you. I come to forums to have fun and relax. I think the only times staff really need to get strict is when members start attacking each other which often happens in a heated debate. Members just need a reminder to attack the subject of the debate and not each other.

The other time would be when members disregard the board rules. Again, a simple reminder of the board rules they have broken usually works with no further action necessary. Having a very strict forum (IMO) is a bad move and members will leave to find a nice laid-back forum...like Off Topix! You all knew I was going to say that...right?

I'd like to think that whilst undoubtedly there has been times that I have either been too strict or too loose with the rulings, I've gotten to the point where I've found a happy medium between the two.

Why I like it here. It is so laid back and inviting. The last thing I want to do when going to a forum is feel uninvited. Even after not being here for a year, I feel back at home.



My style when I did administrate in the past was very laid back.
