NEW YORK (AP) -- A small study of casual marijuana smokers has turned up evidence of changes in the brain, a possible sign of trouble ahead, researchers say.

The young adults who volunteered for the study were not dependent on pot, nor did they show any marijuana-related problems.

"What we think we are seeing here is a very early indication of what becomes a problem later on with prolonged use," things like lack of focus and impaired judgment, said Dr. Hans Breiter, a study author.

Longer-term studies will be needed to see if such brain changes cause any symptoms over time, said Breiter, of the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Previous studies have shown mixed results in looking for brain changes from marijuana use, perhaps because of differences in the techniques used, he and others noted in Wednesday's issue of the Journal of Neurosciences.

They're gonna have to be a bit more conclusive than that if they want to convince anyone.

I'm sure the brain changes, but if you can't even say what those changes mean...

Could the changes just make users even dumber?

A teenage mother drove off from a friend's house after smoking marijuana - forgetting she had left her baby on the car roof.

Catalina Clouser, now 21, drove 12 miles home before realising the two-month-old tot was not inside the vehicle and was arrested as she re-traced her journey.

The tiny baby was discovered by a passerby, still in a car seat and miraculously unharmed, in the middle of the road.

Clouser, from Phoenix, Arizona, astonishingly escaped jail and was instead sentenced to 16 years probation after pleading guilty to child abuse and driving under the influence.

She was just 19-years-old in 2012 when she went to a friend's home to smoke marijuana.

Clouser told Maricopa County Superior Judge Cynthia Bailey: "I just want to say, I do know that what I did was horrible."

Perhaps, but who knows what she was like before.

I dont care if people want to be stupid and smoke pot. If they want to snort Drano and help thin the herd have at it. But I will never agree to making another deadly substance into the world legal when laws and enforcement are not strict on these people. Drunk drivers keep breaking the laws and hurt people over and over and they keep getting back there license to drive. It will be no different when the pot smokers increase and get on the road. When people drink to much and end up in the hospital for one reason or another because of being drunk to many don't have insurance and you and I end up paying for that. So when it costs me money and possibly my health or families health because of bad behavior from others the enforcement needs to be strict and harsh. And the system needs to get used to the idea of not excepting these substance abusers into hospitals and letting them die when they don't have coverage for there own health. If they cant afford health care they sure should not be acting in stupid behavior. Now if these bleeding heart liberals want to pay for all this out of there own pockets have at it for there care.

You misunderstood the definition of 'liberal'.

Perhaps this will help clarify the matter:

“A liberal is someone who feels a great debt to his fellow man, a debt which he proposes to pay off with your money.”
- G. Gordon Liddy (born 1980)

And then comes....

Marijuana may cause heart problems in young adults

The risk of heart complications appeared small in the study, which included nearly 2,000 people who sought medical attention for complications related to marijuana from 2006 to 2010.
...

"The general public thinks marijuana is harmless, but information revealing the potential health dangers of marijuana use needs to be disseminated to the public, policymakers and healthcare providers," said lead author Emilie Jouanjus, a medical faculty member at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Toulouse in Toulouse, France.

Now that is more worrisome. Less vague, at least.

But the chances are better of doing something REALLY stupid when under the influence of an outside substance, whatever it may be.
Obviously.
However, setting people up to reach a specific conclusion isn't fair journalism.

On a sidenote, Americans ruined the word "liberal".

Well if the progressives would stop changing the name of what they believe every time the jig is up and the people catch on it would not have been a problem.
