What is stuttering?

Stuttering is a speech disorder in which sounds, syllables, or words are repeated or prolonged, disrupting the normal flow of speech. These speech disruptions may be accompanied by struggling behaviors, such as rapid eye blinks or tremors of the lips. Stuttering can make it difficult to communicate with other people, which often affects a person’s quality of life. Stuttering is sometimes referred to as stammering.

Two questions:

  • Do you stutter and if so, how has it affected your life?
  • Do you know someone who stutters?

There's been times when I do this. Its not really affected me. But I hate it when it does happen. So sometimes I have to repeat what I'm saying in order to get what I'm saying across to them.

There is a maintenance man at the hospital who stutters. I sometimes feel bad for him because people either ignore him or they fill in words when he's speaking. I noticed that his stutter gets worse when there are a lot of people around or he's excited about something. I just talk with him like nothing is wrong and if I don't understand, I politely ask him to repeat it. Must be hard for him as I notice the other maintenance men at work don't really associate with him. I see him eating alone when the other maintenance men are all sitting at one table.

Well that's not cool! I think mine might be more stammering then stuttering. Someone would have to be around me long enough to wait and see for it to happen to know which. But to ignore him like that cause of his problem? That's just not right.

Just ask me to repeat something a couple times. I'll get it right the first two times, then I'll get it wrong and try again
