Drinking too many sugary beverages appears to raise the risk of high blood pressure, experts are warning.

Findings suggest blood pressure goes up incrementally for every extra can of sugary drink consumed per day.

Drinking more than 355ml a day of sugar-sweetened fruit juice or carbonated drink can be enough to upset the balance, data on over 2,500 people reveals.

The study by UK and US researchers appears in the journal Hypertension.

The precise mechanism behind the link is unclear, but scientists believe too much sugar in the blood disrupts blood vessel tone and salt levels in the body. Non-sugar sweetened diet drinks did not carry the same risk.

I have a question. What about soft drink with sweeteners but no sugar? <cough>Pepsi Max</cough>

Pepsi Max, similar to its forerunner Pepsi Edge, is a low-calorie, sugar-free cola, marketed by PepsiCo as an alternative to Pepsi and Diet Pepsi.

It differs from Pepsi in that it contains aspartame, potassium benzoate, acesulfame potassium, calcium disodium EDTA and panax ginseng extract while it does not contain high fructose corn syrup or sugar. Pepsi Max also contains nearly double the amount of caffeine. An 8 oz serving of Pepsi contains 25mg of caffeine, where as Pepsi Max contains 46mg in an 8 oz serving.

@Dragon: There's a lot of garbage ingredients in Pepsi Max. The one that really is BAD is the amount of caffiene in only an 8 oz serving. I hope people with high blood pressure and heart problems read the ingredients before they drink Pepsi Max!

That's very true Dragon. I could never drink Pepsi Max due to the amount of caffiene it contains. I would probably get the shakes or be up all night not being able to sleep.

@Dragon: How much Pepsi Max would you say you drink in one day?

Does not all that caffeine make you hyper at all?
