JACKSON, Miss. (WJTV) – A suspect has been arrested in connection to the fire at Beth Israel Congregation in Jackson. Division Fire Chief Charles Felton said the Jackson Fire Department (JFD) Arson Division, who partnered with the FBI and the ATF, arrested an unidentified suspect for arson.
Jackson Mayor John Horhn released a statement after the arrest saying, “Acts of antisemitism, racism, and religious hatred are attacks on Jackson as a whole and will be treated as acts of terror against residents’ safety and freedom to worship. Targeting people because of their faith, race, ethnicity, or sexual orientation is morally wrong, un‑American, and completely incompatible with the values of this city. Jackson stands with Beth Israel and the Jewish community, and we’ll do everything we can to support them and hold accountable anyone who tries to spread fear and hate here.”
Beth Israel Congregation President Zach Shemper said they’re assessing the damage to the building, and they will continue worship services and other programs. Those locations will be determined at a later time. Shemper said several churches have extended offers for Beth Israel congregants to use their buildings as a worship space as they rebuild.
