I started a forum using PHPBB and was reading that one of the best graphics to use for the logo would be .svg . I'm not sure why that is a thing since it's not widely used and found out my .png works just fine. I tried to do a svg with my Corel Draw but the logo turned out to be a megabyte! wow.

What experience do you have with this type of format?
 
SVG are Scalable Vector Graphics so they don't lose their clarity when expanded. Look for Inkscape for a free editor you can play with. It sounds like the logo you created we just way larger than you needed.
 
Exactly what Oldbuddy mentioned @Lämmchen. The only real benefit that I have heard of is that they can be increased or decreased in size without it affecting the quality of the image. That tends to be very beneficial if you create logos in that format because those tend to be resized a lot.
