Teacher killed and skinned rabbit in class to ‘show children how meat is processed’

A teacher has been forced to apologise after killing and skinning a rabbit in front of a group of schoolchildren to show them how meat was processed.

The man, who has not been identified, restrained the terrified creature before snapping its neck and then butchering it during a biology class at Columbia High School in Nampa, Idaho.

The part-time teacher, who also raises animals – including rabbits – for food on his farm, has since apologised and said he simply wanted to give his 10th grade (year 11) class a lesson on the animal slaughter industry.

‘It’s not something that’s done in our school,’ said Allison Westfall, a spokesperson for the Nampa School District.

The killing, which left students ‘disturbed’, only came to light when parents called the school to complain and pupils told other teachers they were upset.

The teacher in question had been asked before to show students how to slaughter and process a rabbit but had declined, Ms Westfall said.

She added that the district, which once catered mostly to students from rural areas, had seen a massive increase in urban enrolment because its proximity to Boise, the capital of Idaho.

She declined to say whether the teacher would be facing disciplinary action.

Do you think this teacher should face disciplinary action? Why or why not?

I don't see why he would need to do a live demonstration of something he could have just explained verbally.

This, in my opinion, did not belong happening in the classroom. Perhaps he should have arranged a field trip to his farm for this demonstration. The students with interest and parental approval could then have seen this live demonstration.
